What is dressy beach style & what should you wear

What’s your beach style vibe? A scorching red bikini, beachy braids, and a hat that screams “Caribbean, here I come”?

For me, the magic of beach fashion is that it can be anything you want. One day, it’s all about soaking up the sun in a tiny two-piece; the next, it’s about channeling sailor-chic for a day on the water. Why choose when you can have the best of both worlds?

I’m a sucker for nautical-inspired looks that still let my favorite bikini shine. Yet, when sunset rolls around and I’ve got a fancy beach dinner booked, I need to trade flip‑flops for something more elegant. That’s exactly what this post is about—that perfect in‑between outfit.

Dressing up for the beach might sound like an oxymoron to some, but trust me, there are occasions when “dressy” isn’t an option—it’s a necessity. Let’s dive into when and why.

When your significant other invites you to a romantic beachside dinner, a simple bikini or striped top simply won’t cut it. The same goes for a business-casual event by the shore, a family get-together, honeymoon beach outings, or even a seaside wedding.

There are countless occasions where your beach style needs to rise above a string bikini.

So what should you wear?

When a refined dress code is required, a dress is often the easiest and most foolproof option. I’ve previously shared a beach outfit featuring a beautiful printed dress, matching wedges, and pretty accessories. You also have the option of a maxi dress. Look for a printed style in a lightweight fabric—the last thing you want is something thick and heavy. Alternatively, you can go with separates, just as I did in this look. I paired fun, bright printed shorts with a crisp white button-down shirt featuring lovely sleeve details. To complete the outfit, I added wedges, gold accessories, and a white hat.
